Kiefer Sutherland’s romance with ex-fiancee Julia Roberts (above, at Lincoln Center in NYC last month) apparently failed because the passion wasn’t there. Roberts, who once dismissed her Flatliners co-star and one-time lover as “young and silly” for proposing to her, called off their wedding just days before the ceremony in 1991, then fled with Jason Patric (which…who was “young and silly” again?). But Sutherland admits now that that was probably for the best; he felt a “huge connection” with the I Love Trouble actress, but their relationship went kaput due to a more friend-like vibe — and differing priorities and fame levels. He’s told Elle UK, “Well, at the time, I wanted to raise horses on a farm in Montana, and she was the number one actress on the planet. That didn’t create a specific rift but there was a gulf in what we actually wanted. “There was a huge connection between us but…it was more like friends than the passionate relationship that she or I would have wanted. She saw that; I did not.” |
