Rick Ross Calls Out 50 Cent At Record-Release Bash

MIAMI — Bossin' up! Rick Ross spent most of Monday in New York promoting his new LP, Deeper Than Rap, which hit stores Tuesday (April 21). But come nighttime, Ross hit the runway, catching a jet to his hometown of Miami for his record-release party.

Ross' shindig was held at one of the city's hot spots, Mansion. Fans and celebrities like NFL stars Larry Johnson and Clinton Portis started filling up the venue around 1 a.m.; DJ Khaled and Ace Hood arrived about an hour later.

Khaled turned peacemaker when a small dustup occurred in the crowd near the stage, but once everyone had calmed down, Khaled and Ace performed a small set consisting mostly of Ace records like "Cash Flow."

Ross and the Carol City Cartel hit the stage around 3 a.m. and "The Bawse" — dressed in a Versace zip-up jacket — got right to it, performing his single "Magnificent."

Not even two minutes into the record, a brawl popped off in the VIP section right below the stage. Security and some patrons started to scuffle. Unfazed, Ross continued to perform, rapping "Usual Suspects."

As tension with security and the fans calmed down, Ross brought up his own friction, his feud with 50 Cent.

"Somebody better tell 50 Cent I'm the muthaf---in' boss!" he yelled before transitioning into "The Boss." "I'm the biggest boss you've seen thus far!" Ross and audience members yelled.

Ross then dug deeper into Deeper Than Rap, hitting his new single "All I Really Want" then going into "In Cold Blood," "Bossy Lady," "Mafia Music," "Gunplay" and Yacht Music."

"There's a parrrrr-tay going on/ All the girls, they welcome," Ross' new reggae artist Magazeen rhymed, getting his chance to shine on the mic during the hook to "Yacht Music."

After relinquishing the stage to let members of the CCC and Gorilla Zoe perform their records, Ross went in on past hits including "Here I Am" and verses from DJ Khaled's "Out Here Grindin' " and "I'm So Hood."

With confetti falling from the ceiling, the DJ cued up Ross' "Face" and the ultra-hard "Valley of Death."

"Walk like a giant, talk like a tyrant," Ross boasted on the record. "When I see this monkey, I'mma be the devil."

The night ended with self-explanatory "Rich off Cocaine," which seemed to strike a chord with the crowd, who sang along "Miami nights/ I'm living the life."

Adam Lambert Memorabilia Crushes 'Idol' Competition On eBay
April 21, 2009 at 11:17 am

'American Idol' fans display their craftiness with handmade Lambert dolls, Anoop Desai light-switch covers and more.
By Gil Kaufman

By this point in the "American Idol" season, fans have a pretty good sense of who is going to vie for the title, and enterprising entrepreneurs are more than happy to satisfy their thirst for everything Gokey, Lambert, Iraheta and Allen with a raft of (mostly) home-brewed memorabilia honoring the leading contestants.

Laugh all you want at these weird and obsessive items, but if last year's collection of "American Idol" ephemera is any indication, these entrepreneurs actually have a pretty good line on which finalists will come out on top.

Leading the eBay merch race this year is none other than Adam Lambert, who was the subject of more than 340 postings at press time on Monday. Along with the usual parade of mouse pads, watercolor paintings, photos, necklaces, pins, stickers, T-shirts, earrings, photo books, Lambert-emblazoned Nintendo DS cases, beer cozies, pillow cases, mirror compacts, dog tags, shower curtains, wall clocks, night lights, leather handbags, decks of cards, a DVD copy of his performance in "The Ten Commandments," an iPhone skin and, of course, charm bracelets.

Some sellers even took the opportunity to try to unload their copies of Tears for Fears' debut, The Hurting, attaching Lambert's name tangentially through his lauded cover of a cover of the band's "Mad World." One of the strangest (and most grammatically challenged) is the post offering up a "Rare Adam Lambert No Boys Allowed Bedroom Floor Mat Rug," which features a sultry picture of the singer and the words "Welcome to My Room. No Boys Allowed ... Unless Your [sic] Adam Lambert." Almost equally creepy/bizarre is the Adam Lambert Flowered Shadow Box Photo, with a gem stone-bedazzled stock photo of Lambert surrounded by seven velvet flowers in a frame.

The most original line of Lambert items is a series of Ken dolls repainted and styled to resemble various Lambert looks on the show, including a gold-jacketed "Ring of Fire" Lambert going for $199, a more generic "rocker" style doll for $99, a suave "Tracks of My Tears" edition in a gray suit ($99) and a remarkably lifelike "Born to be Wild" doll with unkempt hair, a black leather jacket, jeans and designer T-shirt (sold for $182).

Lagging way behind in second place is Danny Gokey, who is the focus of 42 items up for sale at press time, most of them photos, pins, iron-on transfers, mouse pads, dog tags, a few paintings and a series of "Got Danny?" shirts, hats and tote bags. Also for sale is a red, white and blue "Vote Danny Gokey" button ($10) reportedly being sold by a Gokey relative with all proceeds going to Sophia's Heart Foundation, which was started in honor of Gokey's late wife.

Just behind Gokey is nice-guy singer Kris Allen with 39 items, also mostly of the photo/ T-shirt/ keychain variety. There is a heart-shaped ladies charm watch, Allen's very own one-of-a-kind restyled Ken doll, dressed in jeans, a vest, black tie and white button-down for just $79.99, and a "limited edition" photo mosaic made up of thousands of tiny images from the show, which comes with a lucky four-leaf clover "Idol" poker chip.

There are only 22 items up for sale related to 16-year-old sensation Allison Iraheta. The highlight is a one-of-a-kind 4 1/2 inch doll decked out in flaming red hair, new-wave dress and black nail polish.

Way down the list, Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai have about a dozen items each up for sale, including a light-switch cover, wristband, and homemade trading cards and art prints. Of course, there are also "Got Anoop?" and "Got Lil?" shirts, caps, infant onesies, tote bags and aprons.

Matt Giraud, who got the first-ever judges' save last week, is, not surprisingly, at the bottom of the "Idol" swag food chain, with only about a dozen items being offered. The most interesting are the copies of his independently released 2006 Mind, Body & Soul CD, with prices ranging from $20 to $40.

Well, now we know all six. Last month, after four of this year's Lollapalooza headliners were revealed, event founder Perry Farrell told MTV News that he wasn't stressed by the premature leakage ... after all, he still had a pair of big-name bill-toppers to announce, and late Monday he did just that — and then some.

Farrell unveiled the full Lollapalooza 2009 lineup — a list of more than 100 acts — including his two top-secret headliners: Tool and the Killers, who will join previously reported headliners the Kings of Leon, the reunited Jane's Addiction, the Beastie Boys and Depeche Mode (as in previous years — 2008's closing-night duel between Kanye West and Nine Inch Nails, for example — each night at Lolla 2009 will have two headliners).

Artists on the undercard include Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Rise Against, TV on the Radio, Vampire Weekend, the Decemberists and Ben Harper and Relentless 7. In keeping with previous years' Lolla lineups, there's also a strong undercurrent of electronic music (Thievery Corporation, MSTRKRFT, Crystal Castles and Simian Mobile Disco), hip-hop (Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, Rye Rye) and hotly tipped indie acts (Animal Collective, Band of Horses, Of Montreal, Deerhunter and Ida Maria).

Lollapalooza 2009 will take place August 7-9 in Chicago's Grant Park. A limited number of advance-price three-day passes are now available through Lollapalooza.com for $190. When those are gone, regular three-day passes will go on sale for $205. There are also VIP packages and private luxury cabanas available for the well-heeled members of the alternative nation.

Asher Roth Has A Lot More To Offer Than 'I Love College'
April 21, 2009 at 6:50 am

'People need to trust me when I say this — there is going to be a lot more benchmarks along the way,' MC says.
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Tim Kash

Asher Roth knows there have been plenty of rappers before him that started with the spark of a breakout single but weren't able to catapult beyond their initial success.

But for every Sir Mix-a-Lot ("Baby Got Back") or Panjabi MC ("Beware of the Boys"), there's a 50 Cent or Eminem — artists with a track record of credible hits.

Roth gets that he's going to be identified as the "I Love College guy" at first — but despite the rest of his album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle, being "not even close" to the sound of that single, the recent Atlanta transplant said he's embraced the popularity that's come along with the success of his first hit.

" 'I Love College' is like a concept record. It's very close to being a novelty record," Roth told MTV News. "Is it something I want to base my career off of? Did I expect that to be like, 'This is going to be my career? This is my career launcher?' Absolutely not. I wrote that song for me, because I'm sitting on the couch and I'm like, 'I love college, I miss college, I want to go to college for the rest of my life.' I wrote that song for me. Next thing you knew, you had a bunch of people being like, 'I feel that same exact way.' So yes, in my career everyone's going to date it back to 'I Love College,' but people need to trust me when I say this — there is going to be a lot more benchmarks along the way."

For now, however, the quick-witted MC is reveling in the "I Love College" glory. He recently performed at his alma mater, West Chester University in Pennsylvania. Back when he was enrolled, he appeared at a number of shows on campus before he dropped out to pursue music — this time, however, with a hit on his hands, the blond rapper headlined for the first time in front of family and friends.

"It's a little crazy, man. It just goes to show you it's working," Roth of his recent success. "This music is bringing people together. West Chester — I'm kinda cheating a little bit, because that's home. So it isn't until I walk the streets of British Columbia and people are outside waiting for me. Then, I know, 'OK, this is really working.' "

Adam Lambert Got 'American Idol' Training At Wild 'Zodiac Show'
April 21, 2009 at 6:50 am

'He's really cut out for this on every level,' says Lee Cherry, the L.A. revue's co-creator.

For most "American Idol" fans, Adam Lambert is the wildest, most unusual contestant they've ever seen on the show. But to his friends and castmates in Los Angeles' long-running variety extravaganza "The Zodiac Show," the Adam you see on the "Idol" stage every week is nothing compared to what they've witnessed back home.

Lee Cherry, "Zodiac" co-creator and director, first met Lambert in Europe in 2003, when the singer was touring with the musical "Hair," and he directed Lambert in his "Zodiac" stage debut in 2004. "He did [Sam Cooke's] 'A Change Is Gonna Come' and as Randy would say, he blew it out the box, dog," Cherry said. "That was pretty much the first time in L.A. anyone saw him being Adam in all his full fabulousness, and everybody lost their minds."

Several years later, at the most recent "Zodiac" show in December, Cherry said Lambert wrote some songs with Madonna collaborator Monte Pittman, and he got a real sense of how far the 28-year-old singer could go. "That was a big collaboration and a big production number, where he had the whole outfit and the dancers and the whole thing. ... We love seeing Adam do his thing how he loves to do it, and you've only seen the half of it on 'American Idol,' " Cherry said.

The six-year-old "Zodiac Show" started as an underground, after-hours monthly party hosted by Los Angeles' dance and glam-rock communities that grew into an irregular series of big, one-off productions at the city's Avalon Theatre. The events revolve around a sign of the Zodiac, and they include every kind of performer imaginable, from singers, dancers and actors to comedians, jugglers, fire-eaters and high-wire acts. It's been described as a "rock 'n' roll Cirque du Soleil."

Part of the reason Cherry thinks Lambert is doing so well on "Idol" is because of the experience he's had onstage at the "Zodiac," performing his own outrageous glam-rock songs, as well as creative covers of other songs and learning how to be part of an ensemble. "Before 'American Idol,' [he] didn't really have an outlet for his talent, to do it the way he wanted to do it," Cherry said. "Every time he was working, he had to fit into some kind of box. He was doing it because he had to do it, he had to live. But on our stage is where he got to ... bring the black nail polish, bring as much glitter as you can bring, what's the craziest outfit you can. It's never too much, except for when it is. Because sometimes, sometimes we ... "

Scarlett, the show's other co-creator and co-lead singer, interrupted Cherry: "We have to tone him down," she laughed.

Like, for instance, the time he wanted to perform a song with a flaming headdress, and they had to convince him it was too dangerous.

Cherry, Scarlett and co-creative director and former Pussycat Dolls member Carmit Bachar said they are all immensely proud of Lambert's success on "Idol," but they're not surprised he's doing so well on such a mainstream national stage.

"I think that it's really been beautiful on the show to see him grow and take in all the comments and the constructive criticism and really add it to his performances, and he's so humble and so beautiful, and he means it and he's real," Scarlett said.

That doesn't mean they weren't a bit worried that America wouldn't know what to do with a eyeliner-wearing, banshee-wailing, glam-rock, emo theater kid who didn't exactly fit the more traditional style of an "Idol" front runner. "He's really cut out for this on every level," Cherry said. "[But] we ... honestly didn't know how he was going to be received. We thought he was either going to get kicked off right away or he was going to win. We figured it was going to be one or the other. We knew he was going to be the best singer of the bunch by far."

After conferring with Lambert early on, Cherry posted a number of the singer's "Zodiac" performances on YouTube, including the very David Bowie-esque glam-rock original "Crawl Thru Fire" from last September, which has garnered more than 400,000 views to date. While each "Zodiac" revue is full of performances from a variety of Hollywood artists at the top of their respective games (choreography, dancing, songwriting, makeup, singing), he said Lambert has that indescribable "it" factor that sets him apart even on a stage with other super-talented performers.

Scarlett said despite Lambert's unusual background and flamboyant (for "Idol") style, she's not surprised America is embracing him. "They heard somebody breaking through," she said of the early embrace of Lambert. "When you're witnessing something like that, it's undeniable, even if you're from, like, Arkansas. You're like, 'Oh, my god, I'm watching a star. This is incredible!' "

Rob Dyrdek Loves 'American Idol,' But Not The Fourth Judge
April 21, 2009 at 4:59 am

'I would bet money she's not there next year,' he says of Kara DioGuardi.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Tim Kash

Of all the controversies surrounding this year's season of "American Idol" — lip-synched group performances, a semifinalist being disqualified, the introduction of the "judges' save" — none are more heated than the question of the fourth judge. Kara DioGuardi joined Simon, Randy and Paula at the panel for the start of season eight, and the hating began almost immediately.

Now one MTV reality star has joined in the ongoing Kara smackdown, going so far as to predict she'll soon be booted from the show.

"I would bet money she's not there next year," said Rob Dyrdek, the professional skater and star of MTV's "Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory." He spoke with MTV News while on the red carpet for Justin Timberlake's new show, "The Phone."

Dyrdek, a huge "Idol" fan, insists he hasn't missed an episode in five years. He attended last week's live show, sitting just behind Randy and getting a close look at all the judges — as he has all season, Dyrdek came away unimpressed with DioGuardi.

"I think what it is — she just doesn't fit," Dyrdek explained. "I feel like her opinion is neither here nor there.

"The thing about Paula, Simon, Randy, is it's the perfect blend," he continued. "Where Paula's trying not be mean — like, all over the map — Randy's being cool but subtle and Simon gives exactly how it is. And that's a solid dynamic. You have the other chick kind of trying to find her place while it's happening. It doesn't work."

Dyrdek's low opinion of DioGuardi, however, hasn't dampened his enthusiasm for the show. While he believes Adam Lambert will win the entire contest ("He's 10 steps above everybody else"), Dyrdek's personal favorite is Danny Gokey, whose wife died shortly before his "Idol" audition.

"Being in love and being married and having someone die like that so young," said Dyrdek, "for his story, I hope he goes on to be successful."

Mark Hoppus/ Pete Wentz Octopus Mystery Solved ... Sort Of
April 21, 2009 at 4:51 am

'Everything will be known very soon. I am the Octopus,' Blink-182 bassist cryptically tells MTV News.
By James Montgomery

It's a mystery that has plagued the Twitter-verse for nearly a week now: What do Blink-182's Mark Hoppus, Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz and an octopus have in common?

Well, we have the answer. Sort of.

But first, a refresher: For fans not in the know, on Friday, at 10:53 a.m., Pete Wentz posted a link to a photo on his Twitter account, showing what appears to be a USB flash drive (or a very fancy Zippo) emblazoned with the image of an angry-looking octopus. A scant three minutes later, Hoppus responded by posting a photo of his own, showing the reverse side of that same USB drive, emblazoned with the Fall Out Boy logo.

Considering that all of this followed a week of spirited Tweeting (that will always sound gross) between Hoppus and Wentz, which resulted in the former remixing a version of the latter's song "America's Suitehearts," many believed that the octopus USB drive is the final resting place of that remix. (For reasons not exactly clear to anyone, Hoppus has spent most of the past month posting photos of the same octo on his blog — like this one of Wentz wearing an octopus shirt, or this one of a pair of plastic octopi.)

Confused — and determined to get to the bottom of the cephalopod chicanery — MTV News decided to reach out to both parties to see what the heck was happening.

We e-mailed Wentz, who, when asked if the flash drive contained Hoppus' remix of "Suitehearts," told us, "That's some of it." He then added that "only 50 will be made, with other content, then will be distributed one at a time."

We asked him for clarification but didn't receive a response. Still confused, we reached out to Hoppus for clarification, only he wasn't about to divulge any additional secrets.

"Everything will be known very soon. I am the Octopus," he wrote. "That's all I can say right now."

So there you have it, straight from the guys themselves. The octopus flash drive contains Hoppus' remix, plus some mysterious additional content. Only 50 of them will be made, and they'll somehow be distributed one at a time. Oh, and Hoppus is the Octopus.

That's all we've got for now. Solving mysteries is tough work.

Eminem Posts Relapse Cover Art On Twitter
April 21, 2009 at 2:10 am

Cover shows an image of Em made up of pills.
By Gil Kaufman

Eminem's <I>Relapse</I>
Photo: Interscope Records

Never one to employ subtlety when a sledgehammer will do, Eminem released the cover art to his upcoming Relapse album through his Twitter account on Tuesday (April 21).

The image that will grace the MC's first disc of new material in more than four years features a headshot of Slim Shady staring out with eyes narrowed composed entirely of thousands of pills. The not-at-all-veiled nod to the rapper's struggle with addiction to prescription medication is in keeping with Em's career-long habit of putting his personal struggles on display in his art, from his problems with twice-ex-wife Kimberley Mathers to his disputes with his mother and beating at the hands of a bully in high school.

The iconic backward E that has been a part of Em's graphic persona makes another appearance in the lower right-hand corner at the end of the album's title in a sticker made up to look like the label on a pill bottle. It lists the patient's name as Mathers, Marshall, with an address in his old stomping grounds, Detroit's 8 Mile Road, and counsels him to take one tablet once a day at 3 a.m.

The refill date on the prescription reads 5-19-09, the album's release date, and the prescribing doctor is, of course, Em's mentor and beatmaster, Dr. Dre. In a recent cover-story interview with XXL magazine, Em explained that the death of best friend and D12 member Proof in 2006 was part of what put him on a downward spiral of prescription drugs after he'd already visited rehab to work on an addiction to sleeping medication that scuttled his 2005 European tour.

"I think it kind of hit me so hard," Em told the magazine about Proof's shooting death in a Detroit bar. "It just blindsided me. I just went into such a dark place that, with everything, the drugs, my thoughts, everything. And the more drugs I consumed — and it was all depressants I was taking — the more depressed I became, the more self-loathing I became."

The cover has a decidedly more serious look than the first video for the album, the celeb-slamming "We Made You," which has drawn fire from right-wing talking head Bill O'Reilly for its digs at former Republican vice-presidential candidate Governor Sarah Palin. Relapse will be followed by a sequel album tentatively slotted for later this year titled Relapse 2.

Perez Hilton Was 'Shocked' By Miss California's Gay-Marriage Answer

Carrie Prejean says her response was 'spoken from my heart, from my beliefs and for my God.'
By Eric Ditzian

The war of words between a celebrity blogger and a beauty-pageant contestant started Sunday at the Miss USA competition, when Perez Hilton asked Miss California Carrie Prejean if more states should legalize same-sex marriage. Prejean stated her opinion that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

On Tuesday (April 21), the feud continued as both Hilton and Prejean took to the TV networks to defend their positions — and criticize each other.

"When I first heard her answer, I was shocked, because I thought having been from California, a state that recently passed Proposition 8 outlawing same-sex marriage, she should have been better prepared to answer that question," Hilton said on CBS' "The Early Show." "There are various other ways she could have answered that question and still stayed true to herself without alienating millions of people."

Hilton went on to suggest one such answer: "As a future Miss USA, it is my job not to be a politician but to be someone who represents and inspires the women and the troops, and I think it's great that the states get to decide for themselves."

Hilton maintained that Prejean's answer, in which she awkwardly endorsed "opposite marriage," did not cost her the crown and that it was "very rude" to say during interviews that she felt like a winner.

On NBC's "Today" show, Prejean stood by her answer, saying she had "spoken from my heart, from my beliefs and for my God" and never meant to offend anyone.

"When I heard it from him, I knew at that moment after I had answered the question, I knew that I was not going to win because of my answer," she continued. "It's not about being politically correct. For me it was being biblically correct."

Paula Abdul Says Kara DioGuardi Won't Replace Her On 'American Idol'

'It's taken me awhile to get comfortable in my own skin with the show,' Abdul tells 'Nightline.'

Although Paula Abdul's contract is up at the end of this season of "American Idol," the show's original female voice doesn't think that anybody — new judge Kara DioGuardi included — can replace her.

"I don't think anyone [can]," Abdul told ABC News' "Nightline" in an interview that airs Thursday. "First of all, Kara says, 'I could never replace you.' "

DioGuardi might not have her sights set on Abdul's seat, but Paula said she didn't have much say in what she thought about the addition of a fourth judge. "I just got out of the hospital this past August. I had three days to pack and go on the road [for 'Idol' auditions]. I found out on the way to the airport," she said.

She said Randy Jackson "found out hours before me" and "I was surprised, because Simon has always been against the fourth. We've had guest judges come in before, and he banned that from happening anymore."

Abdul did say that she doesn't always see "Idol" in her future. "Whenever there is change, it's not about replacing anybody, it's about possibly moving on," she said, adding, "I love the show, I do. I love what I do on the show, and I'm loving it more this season than ever. It's taken me awhile to get comfortable in my own skin with the show."

Addressing rumors that she has a substance-abuse problem, she said she has never abused prescription drugs and has never showed up to work drunk. "I've never been drunk in my life. I don't like it," she said. "It's not my thing. Spending money on clothes and shoes — that's another thing."

She also said that her reality show, "Hey Paula," didn't accurately show people what it's like to be Paula Abdul. She thought the show led many viewers to think she had some sort of drug problem "because I'm falling asleep and a camera is on me. I don't have anything that is shameful," she said. "I don't have anything to be embarrassed about. That was not an accurate documentation of my life."

Justin Timberlake was joined by pals like fellow former 'NSYNC member/ "America's Best Dance Crew" judge JC Chasez at the premiere party for his new MTV reality show, "The Phone," in Los Angeles Monday night.

On the Timberlake-produced show, which premieres Tuesday at 10 p.m. on MTV, contestants are called on the phone and asked if they want to go on an intense mission for a chance to win $50,000.

"We plot each show around a movie plot," Timberlake explained last week. "And they become the main character in this movie."

When MTV News caught up with "High School Musical" alum Ashley Tisdale at the party, she revealed just who she likes to get phone calls from.

"Probably, when I'm overseas, [a call] from my family members," the singer said. And she was quick to point out just who she doesn't like calling her: "My ex-boyfriend," she said. Tisdale recently broke up with V Factory member Jared Murillo.

Tisdale, who is best friends with the likes of Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, also shared that the biggest names in her phone aren't her former "HSM" co-stars, but a former boy-bander.

"I do have Nick Lachey," she said, laughing. "I have a lot of friends. I'm not going to name them all."

Unfortunately for Tisdale, Timberlake isn't yet in her contact list. "I would love to work with him," she said. "I would like his number. I know, seriously, [if I had it] we could be best friends."

Ashley also shared what she would and wouldn't do for $50,000. Climb the Empire State Building? "I don't know about that one," she said. "I'm scared of heights." Open-mouth kiss a dog? "Maybe." Pose nude? "No."
